Home Repairs & Improvements

NeighborWorks is dedicated to improving the overall quality of our community’s housing stock by making homes safer and more energy-efficient. We work directly with homeowners, qualified contractors, and volunteers to ensure that all work performed is to the highest standards. The following programs are currently available:

Aging in Place

Through our aging in place program, we assist elderly (60+) homeowners with a variety of home repairs and modifications, including:

  • Bathroom modifications
  • Home safety improvements, including grab bars
  • Wheelchair ramps
  • Porch repairs
  • Interior and exterior painting
  • Yard work and landscaping

If you live in Lackawanna County, contact the Lackawanna County Area Agency on Aging at (570) 963-6740 to apply. If you live outside Lackawanna County, contact NeighborWorks directly at (570) 558-2490 for more information.

Beautiful Blocks

Our Beautiful Blocks program provides matching grants of up to $1,000 per property to groups of 5 or more Scranton residents to help them make exterior improvements to their homes. Grants are awarded annually through a competitive application process.

Scranton Homebuyer Assistance Program

The Scranton Homebuyer Assistance Program (SHAP) provides financial assistance for exterior home repairs. Eligible homebuyers who purchase a home in Scranton can receive up to $5,000 for exterior home repairs and improvements, including (but not limited to) roofing, siding, windows, doors, porches, fences, landscaping, and sidewalks.

To qualify, the home must be located in the City of Scranton and the sale price must be no more than $120,000. Homebuyers must apply prior to closing and agree to participate in NeighborWorks’ homebuyer education program.

We are not currently accepting SHAP applications.
